The International Centre for Innovations in Communication Research and Media Writing (ICICREMW) targets emerging needs of communication researchers, students, journalists, social scientists, and researchers interested in the science of communication, in relation to current issues in communication research (theory, methodology, analysis, communication, implementation, and evaluation of research findings).

The centre primarily trains students in how to deal with innovations in communication research, and helps them to develop excellent writing skills in today’s fast changing media and communication landscape. We research increasingly interdependent relationships between mass media and society, mass media influence and effects at micro, meso, and macro levels, and the innovative area covering the role, uses, and significance of the mass media in social work theory and practice.

The creation of the Centre stems from the fact that the world needs reliable, informed, and well-written research that will help citizens make informed decisions and judgments on issues that affect their daily lives. The Centre is a private initiative, outside the University. Centre students come from the University of Buea as well as those in other Academic and Professional Higher Education Institutions in Cameroon and elsewhere.  Information is crucial for daily survival. Information and news constitute essential bedrocks for sustainable development and sustainable democracy in Cameroon, Africa, and the World.

Communication Research is the basis of this foundation. When students graduate, they do not gain deeper knowledge of communication theory, methodology, and analysis. The ICICREMW is created to level this knowledge and skills lacuna. We look forward to publishing highly competitive scientific articles, books, and book chapters in the relevant field. These should contribute to the knowledge framework in communication research and media writing.  We aim to exert influence over the techniques and the organization of communication research.

More specifically, the idea for the creation of a research centre, The International Centre for Innovations in Communication Research and Media Writing (ICICREMW) was born on October 10, 2019. This is the date the Founder of ICICREMW was issued Authorization for his Doctoral Research on, “Professionalisation of Training Towards a Model of Excellence for Journalism and Mass Communication in Cameroon”.

Reflections on the Research Authorization and the research task ahead of him motivated the Founder to think beyond the immediate challenge (Doctoral Research) to a sustainable centre where students will be assisted in gathering excellent knowledge and skills in communication research and media writing. The results of the Doctoral research further strengthened the need for the establishment of a research centre that will serve communication researchers in a world where communication changes with speed and transforms societies and cultures in all dynamic aspects. The idea for the Centre was strengthened after the Doctoral defence of the founder on August 14, 2020. He questioned how best he could put to the public, knowledge generated from the huge sets of data embedded in the thesis.

The answer was to create ICICREMW as a starting point where more of such knowledge will be scientifically produced and disseminated to solve pressing communication problems confronting Cameroon, Africa, and the global community. Due to increasing trends in globalization, we are engaged in continuous efforts to study, understand, explain, and predict how issues and trends driven by communication and technology in one part of the world are likely to affect thinking, opinions, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours in other parts of the world (North-South flow, South-North flow, North-North flow, and South-South flow).

We are interested in multifaceted factors that motivate for opinion, attitude, and behaviour formation and change, in relation to how these processes are linked with media consumption by mass media audiences.  That is why we believe that the news media today are likely to succeed if they depend on research into users’ lifestyles and adoption behaviour for a better understanding of their (users’) needs.
